President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, as he marks his 100th birthday on May 11, describing him as a symbol of integrity, principled leadership and dedicated service to Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Sunday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the president said his “joy knows no bounds” in witnessing the centenary celebration of the prominent Yoruba leader, administrator, educationist and pro-democracy activist.

Tinubu said Fasoranti deserved all the accolades being showered on him because of his “uncommon life of service” and immense contributions to national development.

According to the president, the nonagenarian distinguished himself through his disciplined lifestyle, belief in noble ideals and unwavering commitment to worthy causes.

“His life is a metaphor for integrity, honesty, dedicated service to the nation and true leadership,” Tinubu stated.

The President also highlighted Fasoranti’s academic accomplishments and contributions to education, noting that the elder statesman studied at the then University College, Ibadan, now University of Ibadan, before furthering his studies in the United Kingdom and Australia.

He recalled that Fasoranti served as a teacher at Ondo Boys’ High School and other institutions within the Ondo-Akure axis before establishing schools, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School and St. Frances’ Academy in Akure.

The President further traced Fasoranti’s political journey, describing him as one of the last surviving disciples of the late nationalist leader Obafemi Awolowo.

He noted that Fasoranti belonged to the defunct Action Group during the First Republic and later joined the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic.

Tinubu said Fasoranti served as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of the late Adekunle Ajasin, adding that his integrity and prudence helped stabilise the state’s finances.

The president also praised the elder statesman’s role during the military era, saying he became one of the prominent voices against dictatorship and a strong advocate for the restoration of democracy.

According to Tinubu, Fasoranti emerged as the recognised leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, following internal divisions after the death of Abraham Adesanya.

He recalled that Fasoranti survived an assassination attempt allegedly linked to the regime of late military ruler Sani Abacha, but remained steadfast in his opposition to oppression and authoritarian rule.

The president further acknowledged the personal tragedies Fasoranti endured, including the death of his wife in 1991 and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, by kidnappers in 2019.

Despite the challenges, the president said the elder statesman remained resilient and continued to serve as a moral voice in national affairs.

Tinubu also expressed gratitude for Fasoranti’s support and prayers throughout his political journey, especially during his presidential campaign.

He recalled visiting Fasoranti in Akure at the beginning of his campaign, where the elder statesman prayed for his victory and expressed confidence that he would live to witness Tinubu becoming president.

“I thank Baba for his prayers, his belief in my vision, and his continued support for our Renewed Hope Administration,” Tinubu said.

The President prayed for continued strength and long life for the elder statesman while commending his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s unity, democracy and development.
