The Awori Youth Council (AYC) has called for increased political representation for indigenes in the Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency II, citing a disconnect between current leadership and the community’s needs.

Speaking during a visit to the Old Osolo Palace in Isolo on Saturday, AYC convener Olanrewaju Eboda argued that the growing involvement of non-indigenes in local political leadership has hindered the area’s progress.

He stated that current officeholders lack a fundamental understanding of Awori culture, traditions, and developmental priorities.

“Non-indigenes cannot understand our community, culture and needs like we do,” Eboda said.

He maintained that political offices within the constituency should be reserved for those deeply rooted in the community.

Mrs. Muinat Agbabiaka, the Iyaloja of Isolo Market, echoed these concerns, noting that the Awori people have not benefited sufficiently from their current federal representation.

She advocated for a representative who is intimately familiar with the specific challenges facing the local population.

Prince Olushola Goloba, a community leader in Isolo, attributed the perceived marginalisation of the Awori people to the liberal nature of the Yoruba culture.

In addition to political concerns, Goloba appealed to the Lagos State Government and relevant authorities to expedite the completion of the ongoing Isolo Palace construction project.

AYC Director Comrade Paul Arowolo also emphasised the need for a shift in leadership, asserting that indigenes must be given more opportunities to govern their own communities to ensure effective and relevant representation.
