The federal government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the federal government in a statement issued on Friday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora on the occasion, urging Nigerians to draw lessons from the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.

According to the minister, Eid ul Mawlid provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on values such as compassion, humility and service to humanity.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he said.

The minister also urged Nigerians to use the celebration to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that maintaining the country’s unity remained a collective responsibility.

He called on citizens to celebrate the occasion with restraint and mutual respect, while wishing the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid.

Tunji-Ojo further reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and sustaining peace across the country.

The declaration means government offices and other institutions covered by the public holiday will observe Tuesday as a non-working day in honour of the annual Islamic celebration.
