The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential aspirant, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of an application seeking to restore his bail.
Justice Muhammad Umar issued the order on Monday after Sowore appeared before the court in connection with charges brought against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The activist is being prosecuted over allegations that he published false claims about President Bola Tinubu on his X and Facebook social media accounts.
At the proceedings, Sowore was represented by senior lawyer Olumide Fusika, who recently took over his defence.
The court ruled that the AAC chieftain should remain in custody while it considers a motion filed by his counsel seeking to set aside an earlier order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued against him.
The bail revocation followed Sowore’s absence at the previous court sitting.
During that hearing, the prosecution accused him of employing delay tactics and urged the court to withdraw the bail granted to him.
Although Sowore had written to the court requesting an adjournment, he did not provide any explanation for his absence, a development that prompted the court to issue the bench warrant and revoke his bail.
In a separate ruling, Justice Umar dismissed an earlier application filed by Sowore requesting that the judge withdraw from the case over allegations of bias.
The judge subsequently adjourned the matter until June 24 for the hearing of the application challenging the bail revocation order.
The case continues as the DSS pursues charges against Sowore over the social media posts it alleges contained false statements concerning the Nigerian president.
