Alabi Ogundepo, a distinguished poet, writer, cultural enthusiast and respected community figure from Saki, Oyo State, has died at the age of 84.
Ogundepo passed away on Monday, August 24, 2026, according to a statement issued by the family.
The family, in announcing his death, described the late literary figure as a man whose life was defined by his commitment to Yoruba culture, tradition, language and history.
Born in Saki, Ogundepo developed a strong literary voice through his poetry and writings, which reflected his deep appreciation of Yoruba heritage and the broader human experience.
His creative works and public engagements, the family said, contributed to the preservation and promotion of the cultural identity of his people.
Beyond his literary contributions, Ogundepo was remembered for his dignity, wisdom and compassion.
He was said to have influenced many people through his counsel, friendships, intellectual contributions and commitment to the development of his community.
The family noted that his words and presence commanded respect, while his ideas often encouraged reflection and a deeper appreciation of shared cultural heritage.
The announcement, signed on behalf of the family by the poet’s eldest child, Mrs Dupe Ogundepo Falana, has also drawn condolences from individuals, institutions, traditional leaders, members of the literary community, friends and well-wishers who have reached out to the family following his death.
While mourning him as a beloved father, husband, grandfather, relative and friend, the family said it remained consoled by the legacy he left through his writings, relationships, values and contributions to society.
“Chief Alabi Ogundepo may have departed this world, but his voice, his poetry and the memories he created will continue to live on,” the family said.
The family said it would announce the funeral arrangements and other details in due course.
It also appealed for privacy and prayers as it comes to terms with the loss.
The late Ogundepo was a legendary Nigerian oral poet, chanter, actor, and composer, best celebrated for his mastery of traditional Yoruba arts like Ijala (hunter’s chant) and cultural praise poetry (Oriki).
He also featured in many strategic movies and documentaries that promote the rich culture and tradition of the Yoruba race.
