The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has cautioned masquerades and their followers against engaging in any form of violence during this year’s Egungun Festival, warning that offenders will face the full weight of the law.

The traditional ruler issued the warning on Sunday as preparations reached a climax for the commencement of the annual cultural festival in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, scheduled to begin on Monday.

In a statement released by his chief press secretary, Adeola Oloko, the monarch stressed that the festival should remain a peaceful celebration of Yoruba culture, tradition and communal values.

According to him, the Egungun Festival has been observed by the people of Ibadan from time immemorial and remains an important cultural event that promotes unity, social cohesion and respect for ancestral heritage.

He described the festival as a period for families and communities to come together in celebration through traditional rites, music, dance and other cultural activities.

“The festival is dedicated to celebrating our lores, customs and traditions. It is a moment to showcase the evolution of our society, social cohesion, family unity and solidarity through the offering of sacrifices,” the monarch said.

He added that the occasion provides an opportunity for residents to reflect on the history and progress of the people of Ibadan, making it a period worthy of celebration and merriment.

The Olubadan, however, warned that the festival must not be turned into an avenue for violence, retaliation or rivalry among masquerade groups and their supporters.

“I want to warn masquerades and their followers to eschew violence during and after the festival, as violent conduct of any kind is punishable under the law,” he stated.

The monarch further stressed that the annual event should not be used to settle personal disputes, engage in supremacy battles or launch retaliatory attacks against perceived opponents.

He assured residents that the palace had made adequate arrangements with relevant stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free celebration across Ibadanland.

Oba Ladoja also called on members of the public to cooperate with security agencies and other law enforcement personnel deployed for the festival.

He urged masquerades and their followers to comply with all directives issued by security operatives, particularly regarding approved routes, designated areas and time limits for festival activities.

“Masquerades and followers should not go beyond the point and time marked for them by the law-enforcement agents,” the Olubadan said.

The Egungun Festival is one of the most prominent traditional celebrations in Yoruba culture, attracting large crowds and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the people through colourful masquerade displays and community festivities.
