The Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Olubunmi Isioye-Dada, has died after a brief illness, bringing an end to his service within the traditional leadership structure of Ibadanland.
A palace source, who requested anonymity, confirmed the monarch’s passing in a telephone conversation on Friday, disclosing that the respected chief died at his residence in Ibadan.
According to the source, members of the Omo Oye group had already begun gathering at the late chief’s residence following the news of his death.
Until his passing, Oba Isioye-Dada occupied the revered position of Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, one of the most prominent titles in the Balogun line of the city’s traditional chieftaincy hierarchy.
His death is expected to set in motion the customary succession process within the Balogun line, leading to a series of promotions among chiefs and high chiefs in the ancient city.
Among those expected to benefit from the anticipated reshuffle is Sharafadeen Ali, a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Under the established chieftaincy succession arrangement and subject to the approval of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Senator Ali is expected to move from the position of Ekaarun Balogun to Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland.
Similarly, Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin is expected to advance from Ekerin Balogun to Asipa Balogun as the succession process progresses.
The Ibadan chieftaincy system is renowned for its structured and predictable succession arrangement, with promotions occurring whenever vacancies arise within either the Balogun or Otun lines.
The passing of Oba Isioye-Dada is therefore expected to have significant implications for the traditional leadership ladder in Ibadanland.
