Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has directed all operational teams to evacuate waste collected during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise immediately.
The directive is part of a broader state commitment to delivering a flood-free Lagos as the rainy season intensifies.
In a statement shared via X on Sunday, Wahab confirmed he is receiving hourly updates from field teams.
He emphasised that the same energy used to mobilise residents for the sanitation exercise must be channelled into the swift clearance of all generated waste.
The cleanup operation involves a coordinated effort among the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the ministry’s enforcement units, private-sector partners, and local government councils.
These teams are currently working to lift accumulated waste piles from streets across the state.
Beyond street-level clearance, Wahab noted that the exercise prioritises the cleaning of drainage channels, roadsides, and canals.
This proactive measure is designed to prevent illegal dumping and reduce the risk of flooding.
“We are clearing the drains simultaneously because this is the only sure path to securing our city against flooding as the rains continue to intensify,” Wahab stated.
He described a clean environment as the city’s “first and most effective line of defence”.
The commissioner concluded by urging residents to maintain a consistent culture of cleanliness and responsible waste disposal throughout the year to help achieve a flood-resilient Lagos.
