The Osun State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the violent attack on police officers in Ikire, which resulted in the deaths of two passers-by, injuries to three policemen and the theft of an AK-47 rifle.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, disclosed the arrests on Thursday during a press briefing, stating that the suspects were apprehended on Wednesday following intelligence gathering and technical analysis.
Those arrested were identified as Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, 21; Olalere Taiwo, 21; Olalere Ademola, 26; and Bankole Abiodun, 20.
The incident occurred on Monday, August 24, when police officers led by the Divisional Police Officer responded to a distress call around the Naira and Kobo area of Ikire.
According to the police, the officers were confronted by about 30 armed hoodlums who overpowered them and seized an AK-47 rifle from one of the policemen.
The command said the stolen weapon was subsequently used by the alleged leader of the gang, identified as Ayewo, to fire repeatedly during the attack.
Three police officers and two passers-by were reportedly hit by the gunfire. The two civilians later died from their injuries.
The police said a cutlass-like object was recovered from the four suspects following their arrest.
During interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed to being political thugs.
They reportedly identified Ayewo as the leader of their faction and the individual who used the stolen rifle to shoot at the police officers and civilians.
The command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend Ayewo and other suspects believed to be involved in the attack but who remain at large.
Zungura commended the police officers involved in the investigation for what he described as their professionalism and commitment to the case.
He assured residents that the command would continue its efforts to apprehend all those involved and ensure that they face justice.
The commissioner also appealed to members of the public to provide credible information that could assist the police in preventing further crimes and tracking down fleeing suspects.
