The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary closure of the Iddo Bridge in the Ijora area of the state to allow for critical reconstruction activities as part of ongoing rehabilitation efforts on the bridge.
The closure, which affects vehicular movement across the bridge, is to facilitate the installation of heavy steel bridge beams by the Federal Ministry of Works.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, outlining the periods during which the bridge will be inaccessible to motorists.
According to the commissioner, the beam installation exercise will take place in two phases.
The first phase is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, until 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, while the second phase will be carried out from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 21.
Osiyemi explained that the entire section of the bridge would be shut to traffic during the specified periods to ensure the safe execution of the installation works.
“Consequently, the entire section of Iddo Bridge will be temporarily closed to vehicular movement during the periods stated above to ensure the safe installation of the steel beams on the bridge,” he stated.
To reduce disruptions, the government advised motorists to make use of designated alternative routes.
Road users travelling from Oyingbo and Yaba towards Ijora Olopa, Apapa and Costain have been directed to use Funsho Williams Avenue to continue their journeys.
Similarly, motorists coming from Marina and heading towards Ijora Olopa, Apapa and Costain are advised to descend through the ramp leading to Iddo-Onigbe, connect through Oyingbo and continue via Murtala Muhammed Way.
For those travelling from Ijora Olopa and Apapa towards Carter Bridge and Marina, the state government recommended using Eko Bridge through Apapa Road, before proceeding along Murtala Muhammed Way, Iddo-Onigbe and Carter Bridge.
The commissioner appealed to residents and motorists to cooperate with traffic management officials who will be stationed around the affected areas to direct movement and ease congestion.
He also assured the public that adequate traffic control measures have been put in place to minimise inconvenience and maintain a steady flow of traffic throughout the temporary closure period.
