The Lagos State Government has sealed an i-Fitness Gym facility located around the Jakande Roundabout in the Lekki Peninsula area of Eti-Osa Local Government Area over alleged environmental violations involving the discharge of untreated sewage into public drainage channels.
The enforcement action was carried out on Tuesday by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), which accused the facility of illegally channeling raw sewage into public drains through a pipe, thereby causing environmental pollution and posing health risks to residents.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the disclosure in a statement shared on his official X account.
According to the agency, the facility’s actions constituted a public nuisance and breached wastewater management regulations designed to protect public health and the environment.
LSWMO stated that the discharge of untreated sewage into drainage systems could contaminate the environment, endanger human health, and undermine ongoing efforts by the state government to maintain a cleaner and safer Lagos.
“The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Tuesday, 23rd June 2026, sealed off the facility at Jakande Roundabout, Lekki Peninsula, Eti-Osa, Lagos, over indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into public drains via pipe, thereby causing public nuisance and environmental pollution as well as endangering human health,” the statement said.
The agency explained that the enforcement measure was necessary to ensure compliance with existing wastewater management laws and environmental standards in the state.
Reaffirming its commitment to environmental protection, the Lagos State Government warned that individuals and organisations found violating environmental regulations would face sanctions and possible prosecution in accordance with applicable laws.
The government also urged residents, businesses and corporate organisations to adopt responsible wastewater disposal practices and support efforts aimed at reducing environmental pollution across the state.
“Lagos State Government reiterates the need for the public to adhere strictly to proper wastewater management practices, noting that any individual or organisation found contravening environmental regulations will be meted with appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution in accordance with the enabling laws,” the statement added.
The closure of the gym is the latest in a series of enforcement actions undertaken by the state government as it intensifies efforts to tackle environmental infractions and promote compliance with sanitation and public health regulations across Lagos.
