President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.
The extension was announced in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Adeniyi’s current tenure extension was due to expire on August 1, 2026.
However, the latest approval grants him an additional six months to conclude key reforms and oversee a smooth leadership transition within the Customs Service.
According to the presidency, the extension is intended to enable the Customs chief to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window initiative and ensure an orderly succession process in the service.
The statement noted that during the transition period, Adeniyi will work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to facilitate the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs.
He is also expected to oversee the compulsory retirement of officers who have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or have completed 35 years of service.
Adeniyi began his career in the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s.
Over the years, he advanced through the ranks of the service, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012 and Comptroller in 2017.
He was elevated to Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020 and later appointed Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023, a position he has held since then.
