The United States government has placed 124 Nigerians on a deportation list as President Donald Trump’s administration intensifies its crackdown on undocumented immigrants with criminal convictions.
The Nigerians are among hundreds of foreign nationals identified by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for removal from the country under an expanded immigration enforcement campaign led by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In a publication released on Wednesday, the DHS described those listed as the “worst of the worst” criminal offenders and disclosed their names and photographs on its official website.
According to the agency, the deportation effort targets undocumented immigrants convicted of serious crimes as part of the administration’s broader immigration enforcement strategy.
“The US Department of Homeland Security is highlighting the worst of the worst criminal aliens arrested by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),” the agency said.
It added: “Under DHS leadership, the hard-working men and women of DHS and ICE are fulfilling President Trump’s promise and carrying out mass deportations – starting with the worst of the worst.”
The department, however, did not specify when the 124 Nigerians and other affected foreign nationals would be deported.
Officials said those on the register were convicted of various criminal offences, including assault, wire fraud and other serious crimes.
Apart from Nigerians, the published list includes nationals from several countries, including Cuba, Cameroon, Niger, Togo, Burkina Faso, Mexico and Honduras.
The latest development marks another step in the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration agenda since the president returned to the White House for a second term on January 20, 2025.
Since assuming office, Trump has rolled out stricter immigration measures aimed at tightening border security, reducing illegal migration and accelerating the deportation of undocumented immigrants across the United States.
The administration also introduced partial visa restrictions on Nigerians in June, citing concerns over visa overstays and other immigration-related issues.
The deportation policy has continued to attract international attention. Reports indicate that at least 60 people have been deported to Ghana since September under the United States’ third-country deportation programme.
Last month, lawyers filed a suit before Africa’s top human rights court on behalf of deportees sent to Ghana, challenging the legality of the US third-country deportation policy.
