Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has assured residents and motorists that a vandalised bridge pillar along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway remains structurally sound and safe for use.
Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance on Saturday after inspecting the affected section of the bridge at Vin-Niger, which leads into Festac Town.
The governor’s visit followed the circulation of videos showing the vandalised portion of the facility, triggering concerns among residents and road users about its structural safety.
After an on-the-spot assessment, Sanwo-Olu said preliminary findings showed that the main structure of the bridge had not been compromised.
He explained that the bridge leads into Festac Town, while the land and abutment on which it stands are under the control of the Federal Housing Authority.
According to the governor, vandals had excavated parts of the facility and removed fittings used to secure the structure, although the main bridge remained intact.
Sanwo-Olu commended personnel from the Lagos State Police Command, Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch and members of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) for responding promptly to the incident.
He described the vandalism as unacceptable and vowed that those responsible would be pursued and prosecuted, including people involved in the purchase and sale of stolen public infrastructure materials.
The governor said the destruction of public assets was particularly troubling given the substantial resources being committed by the government to infrastructure development and maintenance across the state.
He also expressed concern over recurring vandalism in Festac Town, citing the destruction of drainage slabs and the theft of iron rods along Second and Seventh Avenues.
Sanwo-Olu urged residents to take greater responsibility for protecting public infrastructure by reporting suspicious activities to security agencies and relevant authorities.
“When you see something, you should say something. Government is not going to be there 24/7.”
He warned that the government would not relent in efforts to apprehend and prosecute suspected vandals, regardless of their status or background.
The governor said the inspection was also part of his administration’s broader efforts to clean up the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor, restore order and protect critical public infrastructure.
He disclosed that significant progress had been made in clearing the corridor of illegal activities and obstructions, adding that he would continue the inspection towards the Alaba Rago axis.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting public assets, safeguarding road users and maintaining law and order across Lagos.
He added that the state government would continue working with security agencies to protect the state and create an environment conducive to residents and businesses.
