The Oyo State Government has issued a formal advisory to residents, urging caution as the 2026 rainy season begins.
The warning comes amid expectations of high-intensity rainfall, which could trigger flash floods, thunderstorms, and temporary road overflows across the state.
Ademola Aderinto, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, stated in a Saturday release from Ibadan that the onset of the season is likely to cause heavy surface runoff.
He explained that because the soil remains relatively firm, water infiltration is limited, forcing runoff onto roads, into drainages, and through various communities.
While Aderinto advised residents not to panic, noting that most flooding is expected to be temporary, he issued a stern warning against obstructing waterways.
He cautioned that cleared drainage channels could become clogged if tampered with or if illegal dredging continues, potentially turning temporary flooding into prolonged, destructive events.
The Commissioner also highlighted the risk of infrastructure damage and increased road accidents caused by water retention.
He appealed to the public to cease indiscriminate waste disposal and any activities that disrupt natural water flows.
In addition to flood risks, the government warned of potential heat waves during this seasonal transition.
Temperatures are expected to fluctuate between 33°C and 35°C. Aderinto advised citizens to stay hydrated, seek shade, and avoid prolonged sun exposure to mitigate the effects of the rising heat.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring environmental conditions and maintaining the free flow of waterways to ensure public safety.
