The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged the Federal Government and security agencies to investigate and prosecute those responsible for attacks and other crimes against journalists, warning that impunity poses a threat to press freedom and democratic governance.

National President of the union, Alhassan Yahya, made the call in a statement issued ahead of the 2026 International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, observed globally on November 2.

The NUJ expressed concern over persistent cases of intimidation, unlawful arrests, physical attacks, cyberbullying and other forms of harassment targeting journalists in Nigeria and elsewhere.

According to the union, failure to hold perpetrators accountable creates an atmosphere of fear among media professionals, encourages self-censorship and ultimately undermines citizens’ right to access accurate and credible information.

It stressed that journalism remains central to democratic governance because journalists hold public officials accountable, amplify the concerns of marginalised communities and provide citizens with information required to make informed decisions.

The union therefore called on relevant government institutions to conduct independent and transparent investigations into reported cases involving attacks, harassment and unlawful detention of journalists.

It said individuals found responsible should be prosecuted in accordance with the law, while existing legal protections against arbitrary arrests and censorship should be more effectively enforced.

The NUJ also warned against the misuse of security regulations to intimidate media professionals, urging authorities to ensure that measures taken in the name of security do not undermine legitimate journalistic activities.

It further appealed to law enforcement and security agencies to regard journalists as partners in democratic governance rather than adversaries.

Beyond government action, the union called for greater collaboration among media organisations, civil society groups and international partners to establish effective safety mechanisms and emergency support systems for journalists operating in high-risk environments.

The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom and protecting media workers, saying threats against journalists ultimately weaken democratic institutions and the rule of law.

It also urged civil society organisations, human rights groups and members of the public to support efforts aimed at creating an environment where journalists can perform their professional responsibilities without fear or intimidation.

The union’s latest position echoes concerns it raised during the 2025 observance of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, when it warned that attacks on journalists and unresolved cases of abuse continued to threaten democracy.

The NUJ concluded its 2026 statement with a strong appeal for greater protection of media professionals, saying: “No journalist should pay with their safety, freedom, or life for reporting the truth.”
