A good governance advocacy organisation, Hope Alive Initiative (HAI), has lauded President Bola Tinubu’s administration for what it described as significant strides in repositioning Nigeria’s education sector through student-focused reforms and infrastructure investments.

In a statement issued by its Director of Press and Communications, Ernest Omoarelojie, the group highlighted the implementation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the approval of more than N250 billion for hostel development in federal universities as landmark interventions aimed at improving access to quality education.

According to HAI, the operationalisation of NELFUND represents one of the administration’s most impactful achievements in the education sector, noting that the interest-free loan scheme has removed major financial obstacles that have historically prevented many students from pursuing tertiary education.

The organisation said the initiative has created fresh opportunities for young Nigerians from different economic backgrounds to access higher education and develop skills needed to contribute to national development.

“The scheme is not just about financing tuition; it is about democratising opportunity. By removing financial barriers, NELFUND empowers students from diverse backgrounds to acquire knowledge, skills and competencies that will enable them to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economy,” the statement said.

HAI noted that the student loan programme aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places strong emphasis on human capital development as a catalyst for economic growth and national prosperity.

The group also commended the federal government’s decision to allocate N2 billion each to federal universities for the construction of 500-bed hostel facilities, describing the move as a strategic response to the accommodation challenges confronting students across the country.

It stated that the nationwide hostel development programme, estimated at over N250 billion, would enhance students’ welfare by providing improved living conditions and creating a more conducive learning environment within university campuses.

“This intervention is a game-changer for thousands of students who have had to grapple with inadequate and dilapidated hostel infrastructure for many years,” the organisation said.

While expressing support for the government’s education reforms, HAI urged university authorities to promptly refund school fees to students who had already paid their tuition before benefiting from the NELFUND scheme.

The group called on Nigerians to continue supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening the education sector, stressing that sustained investments in education remain critical to unlocking opportunities for young people and driving long-term national development.

HAI maintained that the Tinubu administration’s interventions have established a new standard in educational development and expressed confidence that continued commitment to the sector would yield lasting benefits for the country.
