The Ekiti State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a police sergeant, Osayingbemi Temitope, following his alleged involvement in illicit drug use.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday in Ado-Ekiti.
According to Abutu, the dismissed officer was captured in a viral video on May 9 in Ikole-Ekiti, where he was seen behaving erratically after allegedly consuming illicit substances.
He explained that the officer was immediately subjected to medical and psychological examinations alongside internal disciplinary procedures initiated by the command.
Abutu stated that the psychological evaluation confirmed the officer was emotionally stable, while medical tests detected traces of tobacco and amphetamine in his system.
He added that during further investigation, the sergeant admitted to taking illicit drugs.
“During further enquiries, the officer confessed to having taken some illicit drugs,” the police spokesperson said.
The command noted that disciplinary proceedings had been concluded and that the officer was found guilty of misconduct.
“He was recommended for dismissal, and the recommendation was upheld. The command hereby confirms his dismissal with immediate effect,” Abutu stated.
The police spokesperson reiterated that the command would not tolerate acts of indiscipline, unprofessional conduct, or behaviour capable of bringing the Force into disrepute.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Falade Michael, charged officers and personnel of the command to maintain discipline, professionalism, accountability, and integrity in the discharge of their duties.
