The National Secretary of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction, Taofeek Arapaja, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State under the party’s platform.

In a statement addressed to party leaders, members, and residents of the state, Arapaja said his decision was driven by a long-standing commitment to public service and the need to sustain ongoing development initiatives in the state.

He described his political journey as one shaped by decades of grassroots engagement and mentorship under the late Lamidi Ariyibi Adedibu, noting that his experience has prepared him for higher responsibility.

Arapaja, who was a deputy governor in the state, emphasised the importance of continuity, particularly highlighting the achievements recorded under Governor Seyi Makinde since 2019.

According to him, the “Omituntun” agenda has brought measurable progress in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and civil service welfare.

“As we approach 2027, the focus should be on consolidating these gains rather than embarking on political experiments,” he stated, presenting himself as a candidate capable of bridging current achievements with future development.

The former deputy governor outlined his extensive political résumé, which spans multiple levels of governance. He previously served as Chairman of Ibadan South-East Local Government; a member of the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007, and Deputy Governor of Oyo State from 2007 to 2011 under the late Adebayo Alao-Akala.

Arapaja also cited his diplomatic experience, having served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Iran and Jordan during the administration of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan between 2012 and 2015.

Within the PDP, he has held several strategic positions, including National Vice Chairman (South-West), Deputy National Chairman (South), and most recently, National Secretary following his election at the party’s 2025 national convention in Ibadan.

He maintained that his leadership style is rooted in accessibility and inclusiveness, stressing his longstanding relationship with grassroots stakeholders such as traders, artisans, youths, and community leaders.

Arapaja concluded by appealing for the support of party members and the electorate, framing his candidacy as a choice for stability, experience, and sustained development in Oyo State.
