The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disowned a social media publication claiming that it had reaffirmed the Senator David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

INEC described the publication as fake, saying it did not issue any statement reaffirming the leadership of the party following a Federal High Court judgment that nullified the Mark-led caretaker committee.

In a statement issued on Friday, the electoral commission said the publication emerged on social media after Thursday’s court ruling but did not originate from INEC.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wishes to alert the public that a poster and accompanying text circulating on social media, claiming that the Commission has ‘reaffirmed’ a Senator David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), are fake,” the commission said.

INEC also condemned the unauthorised use of its logo and the image of National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna in the purported statement.

“The said poster did not originate from the Commission. The use of INEC’s logo and the image of the National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna, in the said publication is unauthorized,” it stated.

The commission stressed that it had made no announcement endorsing, recognising or reaffirming the Mark-led leadership of the ADC.

“For the avoidance of doubt, INEC has issued no such reaffirmation,” the statement added.

INEC urged members of the public to disregard the publication and rely exclusively on information released through its verified communication platforms.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to disregard the publication in its entirety and to rely only on information from INEC’s official and verified channels,” the commission said.

The clarification comes a day after the Federal High Court in Abuja nullified the leadership of the ADC under former Senate President David Mark, potentially throwing the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections into fresh uncertainty.

Justice Peter Lifu, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, [declared the Mark-led caretaker committee illegal](https://westng.com/court-nullifies-mark-led-adc-voids-atikus-2027-ticket/) and invalidated actions and decisions taken by the committee.

The ruling also affects the process through which former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.

Justice Lifu held that the Senator Mark-led executives acted illegally when they took control of the party and conducted the presidential primary that produced Atiku as its candidate.
