Women in Osun State have taken to the streets to protest the rising cases of killings and pre-election violence ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
The protesters marched to the headquarters of the Osun State Police Command, where they submitted a petition demanding urgent measures to curb violence and protect residents across the state.
The women called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate reported cases of violence, arrest those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
Their action comes amid heightened political activities in Osun ahead of the governorship election, with growing concerns over the safety of voters, political actors and other residents as the poll approaches.
According to civil society organisation Yiaga Africa, which reported the protest, the women are seeking stronger security measures to prevent further violence and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
The protesters urged the police and other security agencies to respond swiftly to incidents of violence and take preventive measures to stop further loss of lives.
They also called for an environment in which residents can exercise their civic rights and participate in the governorship election without fear of intimidation or violence.
