The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sealed more than 25 buildings, including a Mobil filling station, along Ago Palace Way, Okota, Lagos, over alleged environmental violations.

The enforcement operation, led by LAWMA Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin on Sunday, targeted premises and locations accused of contributing to illegal waste disposal and environmental degradation in the area.

During the exercise, LAWMA operatives cleared accumulated refuse from road medians and areas around bridge abutments, which the authority said had become recurring points for indiscriminate dumping.

Compactor trucks, a payloader, tipper trucks and street sweepers were deployed for the evacuation exercise.

According to a statement posted by LAWMA on X, some of the sealed premises contained illegal stalls on road setbacks or accommodated street traders whose activities were linked to littering and indiscriminate waste disposal.

The operation also led to the arrest of some cart pushers accused of dumping waste illegally.

One of the arrested cart pushers, identified as Shamusi Muritala, reportedly admitted to dumping refuse on road medians.

He told officials that he collected as much as N5,000 from customers for waste disposal.

Muritala, who identified himself as a native of Katsina State, reportedly pleaded for leniency during questioning.

Beyond enforcement, LAWMA used the operation to sensitise residents and traders on the need to dispose of waste through approved channels.

Gbadegesin said the authority would continue to enforce environmental regulations against illegal street trading and businesses or individuals patronising traders operating in prohibited locations.

He warned that illegal trading activities could obstruct movement, undermine public order and worsen environmental degradation.

Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, popularly known as the Taskforce, as well as members of the Kick Against Indiscipline team, supported the operation.

The enforcement comes against the backdrop of complaints by residents about waste management in Ago Palace Way.
