The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has announced the death of his mother, Alhaja Sidikat Abake Basiru.
Alhaja Sidikat passed away in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, prompting an outpouring of condolences from political associates, friends and well-wishers across the country.
Confirming the development in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Basiru paid an emotional tribute to his late mother, describing her as a devoted servant of Allah whose sacrifices shaped the lives of her children.
“Alhamdulilah for a life well spent in devotion to Allah and service to humanity!
“I will always remember your love and the sacrifice to enable us be who Allah destined us to be.
“I love you Maami but I accept that we belong to Allah and to Him we shall all return someday!” he wrote.
Following the announcement, sympathisers flooded social media with prayers and messages of support for the former Osun Central senator and his family.
Among those who paid tribute was the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate for the 2026 Osun State off-cycle election, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, who described the news as deeply saddening.
In a condolence message, Oyebamiji said he received the news of Alhaja Sidikat’s passing with a heavy heart, noting that the loss of a mother leaves an irreplaceable void regardless of age or circumstance.
He said his thoughts were with Basiru, his siblings and the entire family during the difficult period.
“My heart is with SRJ, his siblings, the entire family, and everyone whose life was touched by Mama while she was with us,” Oyebamiji said.
While urging the family to take solace in the will of Almighty Allah, he acknowledged Alhaja Sidikat’s dedication to raising children who have continued to make meaningful contributions to society.
Oyebamiji prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the deceased, asking that her shortcomings be forgiven, her grave be illuminated and expanded, and that she be granted Al-Jannah Firdaus.
He also prayed for strength, patience and unwavering faith for Basiru and the entire family as they mourn the loss of their matriarch.
More condolence messages are expected from political leaders and associates as the family prepares for her burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
