The Oyo State House of Assembly has cancelled the planned activities to commemorate its third anniversary, opting instead to focus on governance and ongoing security challenges affecting parts of the state.

The decision was announced on Thursday by the Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, during plenary.

According to the Speaker, the legislature shelved the elaborate anniversary programme in response to the prevailing security situation, particularly in the Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso areas, and as a demonstration of solidarity with residents impacted by the challenges.

The 10th Oyo State House of Assembly was inaugurated on June 14, 2023, and would ordinarily have marked its third year in office with public engagements and celebrations.

However, lawmakers resolved to devote the occasion to reviewing their performance and strengthening efforts aimed at addressing pressing security concerns.

Highlighting the achievements of the Assembly over the past three years, Ogundoyin disclosed that the legislature had passed 36 bills into law across various sectors of governance and development.

He added that the House also adopted 276 resolutions, which were subsequently transmitted to the executive arm of government and other relevant institutions for implementation.

According to him, the resolutions are being tracked through the oversight functions of various committees to ensure compliance and assess their impact.

The Speaker further noted that the Assembly had undertaken post-legislative scrutiny of key laws, including the Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law, 2019, and the Oyo State Security Agency Law, 2020, as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and effective governance.

Ogundoyin said one of the legislature’s major interventions during the period was the organisation of a security summit aimed at addressing persistent security threats across parts of the state.

“The summit was convened in response to persistent and recurring security challenges affecting parts of the state,” he said.

He also revealed that the House conducted nine public hearings on bills under consideration, providing stakeholders, civil society organisations and members of the public opportunities to participate in the lawmaking process.

Reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to its constitutional responsibilities, Ogundoyin said lawmakers would continue to prioritise legislation, oversight and effective representation in pursuit of peace, security and socio-economic development across Oyo State.

“The assembly remains focused on delivering democratic dividends and supporting policies that promote peace, security and socio-economic development in Oyo State,” the Speaker stated.
