The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has called on residents to speak up against unfair business practices by reporting cases of deceptive advertising, defective products, shortchanging, poor service delivery, and other violations of consumer rights.
The agency’s general manager, Afolabi Solebo, made the appeal in a statement issued on Wednesday ahead of a consumer empowerment campaign scheduled to hold in Surulere on June 19.
Solebo said the agency remained committed to protecting consumers through mediation, lawful interventions, and the promotion of ethical business conduct across Lagos State. He noted that consumer participation is critical to ensuring accountability and fairness in the marketplace.
According to him, the upcoming campaign is being organised in collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps Community Development Service group as part of efforts to deepen consumer awareness at the grassroots level.
He explained that the “Know Your Rights” advocacy programme aims to educate residents on their rights and responsibilities as consumers while equipping them with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions in their daily transactions.
Solebo said the initiative underscores LASCOPA’s commitment to preventing exploitation and fostering a business environment where consumers are treated fairly.
As part of the outreach, officials of the agency and members of the NYSC CDS group will engage residents, traders, artisans, and service providers on key consumer protection issues.
The discussions will focus on topics such as the right to quality goods and services, transparency in pricing, and the importance of obtaining receipts and warranties when purchasing products or services.
The LASCOPA boss encouraged residents of Surulere to actively participate in the programme, ask questions, and take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about their consumer rights and obligations.
He also urged members of the public to save the agency’s contact numbers and social media platforms for the prompt reporting of any violations of consumer rights.
