A fire outbreak caused by the explosion of a mobile phone battery has been brought under control at the popular Tecno Complex, Mokola Roundabout in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The incident, which occurred on Monday night, was successfully contained by the Oyo State Fire Services Agency before it could spread to other shops and surrounding properties.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, Chairman of the agency, Moroof Akinwande, disclosed that the emergency was reported at about 8:15 p.m.

According to him, the distress call was placed by one Oluyomade Adepeju, who alerted the agency that a commercial shop within the Tecno Complex at Mokola had caught fire.

Akinwande explained that firefighters, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Amoo, immediately mobilised to the scene upon receiving the alert.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that the second shop located on the upper floor of the commercial building was engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the premises,” he stated.

The fire chief noted that the agency’s personnel acted swiftly to contain the inferno and stop it from extending to adjoining shops within the busy commercial area.

He said preliminary investigations indicated that the fire started after a mobile phone battery exploded and ignited combustible materials inside the shop.

“At exactly 20:15 hours on Monday, 8th June, 2026, the Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distress call from Oluyomade Adepeju reporting a shop fire at Tecno Complex Roundabout, Mokola, Ibadan.

“Fire personnel led by ACFS Amoo promptly mobilised to the scene.

“The firefighters swiftly contained and extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjoining shops and nearby properties,” Akinwande added.

The chairman further confirmed that no casualties were recorded during the incident, while the firefighting team safely returned to base at about 10:58 p.m. after completing the operation.

He also commended officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Mokola Divisional Headquarters for providing security support throughout the emergency response.

Akinwande used the opportunity to advise residents and business owners to observe safety measures while handling electrical and electronic devices to avoid similar incidents.

He equally stressed the importance of installing fire extinguishers in commercial buildings to ensure prompt intervention during emergencies.
