The Lagos State Government has announced plans to establish a Cybersecurity Operations Centre to strengthen the protection of residents’ data and secure digital transactions across the state.

The Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Tunbosun Alake, disclosed this on Wednesday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja.

According to Alake, the initiative became necessary due to the rapid increase in the use of digital payment platforms, online public services and technology-driven systems by residents and businesses.

“We are building a Cybersecurity Operations Centre to protect residents’ data as digital transactions and online services continue expanding across Lagos State,” the commissioner stated.

He revealed that the state currently has 109 data protection officers deployed across ministries, departments and agencies, describing it as the highest number recorded by any state government in Nigeria.

Alake also disclosed that the government had launched the Lagos Campus Network Upgrade project to strengthen digital infrastructure within the public service sector.

According to him, the upgrade is expected to improve operational efficiency, automate government processes, enhance citizen engagement and support the state’s broader vision of becoming a smarter and more digitally connected city.

The commissioner reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and technology-driven development among young people in the state.

He said that within the period under review, more than N900 million was disbursed to support 75 startups and over 80 research projects across different sectors.

Alake added that Lagos continued to attract the highest level of international research funding support in Nigeria due to its expanding innovation ecosystem and technology-friendly environment.

He further disclosed that the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) had significantly expanded its database of residents.

According to him, LASRRA currently holds over 6.8 million registration records, including more than 2.5 million adults and over 2.5 million children captured in the system.
