Three members of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI) community have died following a stampede at a post-convocation party in Ikere-Ekiti.
The victims, identified as two graduates and one student, lost their lives during a night celebration at the Emirate Hotel.
The incident occurred following the university’s second convocation ceremony held on Saturday.
In a statement released Monday, BOUESTI Registrar Mrs Funmilola Adeusi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.
“Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this profoundly difficult time,” Adeusi said. “The university community mourns this painful loss.”
The university management clarified that the incident was not part of the official school proceedings.
Adeusi noted that the convocation ceremony itself was conducted peacefully and without disruption.
She emphasised that the tragedy occurred at a private, off-campus location where students had independently organised a celebration.
According to the Registrar, a fight reportedly broke out at the hotel, which subsequently triggered the fatal stampede.
The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the incident took place around 1:00 a.m. Sunday.
Police spokesperson Sunday Abutu stated that Commissioner of Police Michael Falade has ordered a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
