Management of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has commenced an investigation into the death of a 22-year-old Post-Basic Nursing student, Taiwo Godwin, who died while receiving treatment at the facility.
Godwin, who reportedly had asthma, was said to have been brought to the hospital after experiencing difficulty breathing while playing football.
A media report on the incident quoted one of his colleagues as alleging that oxygen was not administered to the student despite his worsening condition.
However, the circumstances leading to his death have not been independently established.
The incident has sparked concerns within the nursing community, particularly as it was reportedly the second death of a nursing student from the same school at the hospital this year.
Reacting to the development, the hospital said it had begun a probe to determine what transpired before Godwin’s death at its General Medical Practice Unit.
The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Ajibola Abiola, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.
“We recognise the profound grief and distress this unfortunate incident has caused and extend our sincere sympathies to all those affected,” the management said.
It assured students, members of staff and the public that the investigation would be expedited and conducted thoroughly, impartially and transparently in accordance with established procedures.
“We further assure all concerned that every necessary step will be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified, and ensure that justice is served. The Hospital will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities and stakeholders as required,” the statement added.
Management appealed to the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course without prejudice to its eventual findings.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety, professional accountability and the maintenance of high standards of healthcare delivery.
While extending condolences to Godwin’s family, friends and colleagues, the hospital also expressed sympathy to the wider nursing community over the loss.
The management prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and others affected by the death, while praying for the peaceful repose of the deceased.
