A female motorist has lost her life after her vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a roadside building at Mongoro, inward Ile-Zik, on one of Lagos’ busiest routes.
The fatal accident, which occurred on Sunday, was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the agency, preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was driving a Toyota Sienna with registration number LND 162 HB when she lost control of the vehicle.
The vehicle reportedly left the carriageway before slamming into a nearby building.
LASTMA said the impact of the crash was severe, resulting in the driver’s immediate death.
“The deceased, who was driving a Toyota Sienna (LND 162 HB), lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently veered off the carriageway and violently rammed into a roadside building. The ferocity of the impact proved catastrophic, resulting in her instantaneous death. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the unfortunate incident,” the statement said.
The traffic management agency disclosed that its officials, who were on routine patrol in the area, quickly arrived at the scene, secured the accident site and directed traffic to prevent gridlock and secondary crashes.
Although the incident caused temporary disruption to vehicular movement, LASTMA said normal traffic flow was restored shortly after its intervention.
The agency added that officers from the Afonka Police Post, under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters, provided security during the evacuation operation.
Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as another painful reminder of the dangers associated with excessive speed and reckless driving.
He urged motorists to drive responsibly and obey traffic regulations at all times.
“Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life,” Bakare-Oki said.
He further warned that excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes and advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound before setting out on any trip.
Bakare-Oki also appealed to drivers to immediately withdraw any vehicle showing signs of mechanical defects from the road until necessary repairs have been carried out by qualified technicians.
The LASTMA boss extended the agency’s condolences to the family of the deceased, praying that they find the strength to bear the loss.
