President Bola Tinubu has appointed retired surveyor Surv. Moshood Onifade Akinwande as the President of the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON), the statutory body responsible for regulating the surveying profession across the country.

Akinwande is expected to be formally sworn into office on July 21, 2026, by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, in Abuja.

SURCON is the regulatory body overseeing surveying practice in Nigeria.

The council comprises 59 members, including the Surveyors-General of the 36 states of the federation and the Director of Mapping in the Federal Capital Territory.

The appointment has been warmly received by members of the 1981 Set of Ladigbolu Grammar School, Oyo, where Akinwande is an alumnus.

In a congratulatory statement jointly signed by the President of the association, Segun Oke, and made available to journalists, the alumni described the appointment as a recognition of Akinwande’s outstanding contributions to the surveying profession.

According to the statement, the appointment reflects his years of dedication, professionalism and commitment to excellence, while also showcasing the strong academic foundation and discipline associated with Ladigbolu Grammar School.

“This landmark appointment is a testament to Surv. Akinwande’s years of dedication, professionalism, and excellence in the surveying profession. It is also a proud reflection of the solid foundation, discipline, and academic excellence for which our Alma Mater, Ladigbolu Grammar School, Oyo, is known,” the statement read.

The alumni added that Akinwande’s emergence as the head of the country’s apex surveying regulatory body is a source of pride for the school, the 1981 graduating set, Oyo Town, and the wider Oyo community.

“As a Set, we are immensely proud that a product of Ladigbolu Grammar School, 1981 Set, has risen to lead the apex regulatory body for surveying in Nigeria. This achievement brings honour not only to Surv. Akinwande and his family but also to our school, our Set, and the entire Oyo community,” the statement added.

The association prayed for divine wisdom, strength and grace for the new SURCON president as he assumes the responsibility of leading the council, while calling on members of the 1981 Set, fellow alumni and well-wishers to support him with prayers.

Akinwande, who hails from Molete Compound in Oyo Town, retired from the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation in 2018 after serving as Director of Research, Planning and Documentation.

His appointment is expected to strengthen the leadership of SURCON as it continues its mandate of regulating and promoting professional standards in surveying practice across Nigeria.
