The Osun State Police Command has warned individuals, political groups and associations against attempting to forcefully take over the affairs or premises of local government areas in the state.
The command said it had received reports of plans by some individuals or groups to assume control of local government areas despite the matter being subject to ongoing judicial proceedings.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police (Election), Samuel Erale Etaifo, the command described any such action as self-help and a potential threat to public peace.
“No individual, political group, or association has the right to resort to self-help or the use of force to assume control of any Local Government Area or public institution while judicial proceedings are ongoing,” Ojelabi said.
The police urged all parties involved in the dispute to remain patient and allow the courts to determine the matter in accordance with the law.
The command also warned that anyone who attempts to forcibly occupy or disrupt local government facilities would be arrested and prosecuted.
“Any attempt to forcibly occupy or disrupt Local Government facilities will be viewed as a serious breach of the peace and dealt with decisively in accordance with the law, including arrest and prosecution of persons found culpable,” the statement partly read.
The Commissioner further called on parents, community and traditional leaders, political leaders, youth leaders and other stakeholders to caution their supporters against actions capable of undermining peace and security across the state.
Etaifo also congratulated residents of Osun on what he described as the successful and peaceful conclusion of the recent governorship election.
He commended stakeholders for their participation in the democratic process and urged residents to remain calm, respect the rule of law and allow the judicial process to run its course.
“The Police will continue to protect lives and property and maintain peace and public order throughout the State,” Ojelabi stated.
