A former two-term member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Peter Oyetunji, has resigned from the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), accusing Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration of neglecting Surulere Local Government despite the area’s loyalty to the party.

Oyetunji, who represented Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere State Constituency, announced his departure in a letter dated October 6, 2026, addressed to the APM state chairman.

The former lawmaker, who is also a town planner, asked the party to remove his name from its membership registers at the state, local government and ward levels.

He attributed his decision to what he described as the failure of the governor and the party to fulfil promises made to members, as well as the alleged absence of meaningful development projects in Surulere over the past seven and a half years.

In the resignation letter, Oyetunji expressed disappointment over the poor development record of both the state and local governments, arguing that Surulere had not received adequate attention despite the political support extended to Makinde and the party.

“In the last seven and a half years, there has been total blackout of meaningful development by the local government and the state government,” he said.

He alleged that Surulere had suffered complete neglect and a lack of meaningful, people-oriented projects from the state government.

According to him, the situation had become particularly disappointing given the loyalty and support that residents and party members in the area had shown the governor and the APM.

Beyond the development concerns, Oyetunji also criticised the party’s leadership, alleging that its approach had been characterised by arrogance, deceit and disregard for internal democracy.

He accused the leadership of paying insufficient attention to transparency and the welfare of members, arguing that the party had failed to create an environment where members could raise concerns and demand accountability.

The former lawmaker further alleged that loyal and outspoken members who sought improvements within the party had faced deliberate attempts to undermine and victimise them.

“There have always been a deliberate gang-up and victimisation of loyal and outspoken members, who seek accountability and progress for the party and the people,” he said.

Oyetunji said his grievances had made it impossible for him to continue associating with the party in good conscience.

“In view of the above, I can no longer in good conscience continue to remain in the party after eight years of fruitless effort,” he added.

His resignation adds to the political developments surrounding the APM in Oyo State as political actors begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
