The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the political summit hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde at the weekend as a futile gathering of “clownish characters” who lack the capacity to advance democracy or good governance.

In a statement released Sunday by the party’s publicity secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC asserted that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling party remain unconcerned by the activities of opposition elements.

Sadare said the attendees lack the seriousness required to challenge the president in any upcoming election, describing their efforts as a “waste of time” compared to the political momentum of the current administration.

The criticism follows the “Opposition Political Parties National Summit” held in Ibadan on Saturday.

Hosted by Governor Makinde, the one-day event brought together various political leaders to discuss strategies for unseating the APC during the 2027 general elections.

Sadare further attacked Governor Makinde, characterising him as a “naive and deceitful political player”.

He argued that the governor has positioned himself as a moral guide for politicians who have previously failed in governance.

The statement also addressed Makinde’s “Operation Wetie” threat, asserting that the 2027 polls will remain peaceful, credible, and hitch-free.

The APC equally levelled accusations of corruption and abuse of office against the governor, suggesting that he would eventually be held accountable for his administration’s actions.

The summit featured a high-profile roster of political figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Other notable attendees included former governors Rauf Aregbesola, Liyel Imoke, Aminu Tambuwal, and Rotimi Amaechi, as well as political economist Pat Utomi.

Several national party chairmen were also in attendance, including David Mark of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Nenadi Usman of the Labour Party, and Yusuf Dantalle of the Allied Peoples Movement, among others.
