Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has been sworn in for a second term, becoming the first governor in the state’s history to secure and begin two consecutive terms in office.

Oyebanji took the oaths of office and allegiance at 1:40 p.m. on Friday at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti, where he was inaugurated alongside his deputy, Monisade Afuye.

The ceremony was conducted by the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Lekan Adekanye Ogunmoye.

Afuye had earlier taken her oaths at 1:28 p.m. before signing the documents formalising the commencement of her second term as deputy governor.

Following the administration of the oaths, Oyebanji signed the relevant documents, formally commencing another four-year tenure after his re-election in the June 20, 2026 governorship election.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Oyebanji won the election with 319,224 votes, securing a second consecutive electoral mandate.

His inauguration represents a significant milestone in Ekiti’s political history.

Since the creation of the state in 1996, no governor had previously secured and begun a consecutive second term.

Oyebanji’s re-election also ensured continuity in the administration that began on October 16, 2022.

Friday’s ceremony attracted a large gathering of political leaders, traditional rulers, government officials and supporters from across Ekiti and beyond.

President Bola Tinubu was represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau were also present.

Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dele Alake, attended the ceremony alongside other senior federal government officials.

Several state governors and their representatives were also at the event.

They included Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma; Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun; and Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Former Ekiti governors Ayodele Fayose, Segun Oni and Kayode Fayemi were among the prominent political figures who attended the inauguration.

Other dignitaries included the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; former APC National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba; Senator Adams Oshiomhole; and Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele.

Oyebanji’s second-term administration formally commenced after a series of activities organised by the state government to mark his inauguration.

The inauguration programme, which began earlier in October, was designed to culminate in Friday’s ceremony.

The governor’s second term is expected to run until 2030.

His administration has identified areas including healthcare, electricity, roads, water supply, agriculture, human capital development and economic opportunities as priorities for the new tenure.

Oyebanji had earlier described breaking Ekiti’s succession jinx as important to sustaining development and ending what he referred to as an era of “trial by error” in governance.
