A traditional ruler in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, High Chief Akinwalere Akinola, has been shot dead during the burial rites of a fellow traditional ruler.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, as traditional rulers and other members of the community gathered to perform funeral rites for their late colleague.
According to a community source, a firearm was discharged during the ceremony, with the bullet striking Akinola in the head.
“During the programme, a firearm was discharged. The bullet struck High Chief Akinwalere directly in the head, resulting in his instant death,” the source said.
The shooting reportedly caused confusion among participants at the ceremony, while details surrounding how the firearm was discharged remained unclear.
Some reports described the incident as an apparent accidental discharge, but the police have not officially established the cause of the shooting.
Confirming the incident, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said one suspect had been arrested in connection with the death.
“One suspect arrested. Meanwhile, thorough investigation has commenced,” Jimoh said.
Police have not disclosed the identity of the suspect or whether the person arrested was the individual who discharged the firearm.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding Akinola’s death and determine responsibility for the incident.
