A 72-year-old man, Mutiu Lawal, has been arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court sitting in Isabo, Ogun State, for allegedly attacking his neighbour with an iron chair.
Lawal is facing a two-count charge of assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The prosecutor, ASP Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the incident occurred on September 29, at about 1:44 p.m., at No. 40 Ikereku Ayedun, Laderin, Abeokuta.
According to the prosecution, trouble started after the complainant, Mrs Fatimoh Babatunde, approached Lawal over a broken window attached to her daughter’s room.
Olu-Balogun alleged that the window had been damaged by the defendant and that Lawal became violent when Babatunde confronted him about the matter.
The prosecutor told the court that Lawal allegedly picked up an iron chair and used it to attack the woman, inflicting grievous bodily harm and an injury to her shoulder.
Babatunde was said to have raised an alarm during the alleged assault, attracting the attention of neighbours who intervened and subsequently led to Lawal’s arrest.
Olu-Balogun said the offences contravened Sections 252, 351 and 355 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Following the arraignment, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Araba, granted Lawal bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.
The court stipulated that the surety must be a registered bondsman with the Ogun State Judiciary.
Araba ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Oba Correctional Facility pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
The magistrate adjourned the case until October 12 for hearing.
