A passenger has died after jumping from a moving commercial bus in an apparent attempt to escape an allegedly drunk driver’s reckless driving before the vehicle crashed into a median pole at Ogunlana Junction, Ojuelegba, Lagos.
The fatal incident occurred along the Ogunlana Junction corridor, inward Ojuelegba, near the Fallout area of Surulere, involving a commercial Volkswagen bus with registration number LND 130 XR.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, September 27, 2026, by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to preliminary security reports cited by the agency, the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and had been driving recklessly shortly before the crash.
Other motorists approaching from behind reportedly exercised caution and attempted to avoid colliding with the erratically driven bus.
Amid the confusion, a male passenger reportedly jumped out of the moving vehicle in an apparent attempt to escape the uncontrolled bus.
He sustained severe injuries after hitting the ground and subsequently died from the injuries.
LASTMA said its personnel conducting routine traffic surveillance along the Ojuelegba axis swiftly responded after sighting the crash.
The officers secured the accident scene, introduced emergency traffic management measures and removed the deceased passenger and the badly damaged vehicle from the carriageway.
Their intervention, according to the agency, helped avert the possibility of a secondary collision involving other motorists.
Security personnel from the Area C Police Division, Ojuelegba, provided security cover at the scene, while officials of the State Emergency Management Agency evacuated the remains of the deceased.
LASTMA warns motorists against reckless driving
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as another reminder of the dangers associated with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless motoring and operating mechanically defective vehicles.
Bakare-Oki urged commercial and private motorists to conduct comprehensive mechanical inspections of their vehicles before embarking on journeys.
He specifically advised drivers to pay attention to braking systems, tyres, steering mechanisms and other critical safety components to reduce the risk of road crashes.
While commiserating with the family of the deceased passenger, the LASTMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to prompt emergency response, effective traffic management and the speedy clearance of accident scenes to preserve lives on Lagos roads.
He also urged members of the motoring public to promptly report traffic-related incidents, road accidents, vehicle breakdowns and other obstructions through LASTMA’s toll-free short code, 3367.
