The Ogun State Government has suspended the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, over alleged involvement in partisan political activities.

State Executive Council approved the suspension with immediate effect, pending an official investigation into complaints concerning the monarch’s conduct.

A statement issued on Tuesday by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Dapo Abiodun, said the decision was taken pursuant to Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021.

The suspension was conveyed in a letter dated October 20, 2026, signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat.

According to the government, several complaints had been received concerning the traditional ruler, particularly his alleged participation in “overtly political actions and activities,” some of which were reportedly publicly posted and promoted by him.

Government maintained that partisan politics was contrary to customary law and prohibited by statutory provisions, arguing that such activities could undermine the dignity of the traditional institution and create tension among subjects with different political affiliations.

It said the suspension was imposed in the interest of peace, order and good governance in Ogun State, particularly within Iselu Kingdom, while the allegations are subjected to a detailed review.

“In recent time, the State Executive Council has received several complaints regarding your actions as a traditional ruler,”. the letter read in part.

“Notably, the council has received a series of complaints about overtly political actions and activities conducted by you or at your directive, with many being publicly posted and publicised by you.”

The government further stated that partisan politics could “demean the stool and trigger a breakdown of law and order” among residents of the kingdom who subscribe to different political persuasions.

Under the conditions attached to the suspension, Oba Akinyemi was directed to immediately vacate the Eselu palace and remain away from the premises throughout the period of his suspension.

He was also barred from parading himself or accepting recognition as the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom during the suspension.

The monarch was further prohibited from wearing or using any crown, whether beaded or otherwise, ileke, beaded staff, irukere or any other paraphernalia associated with the office of an Oba.

He was also directed to make himself available promptly for any meeting or sitting convened by the state government as part of the investigation into the allegations against him.

The letter stated that the suspension would remain in force pending the outcome of the official and detailed review of the allegations.

Copies of the suspension letter were forwarded to the Secretary of Yewa North Local Government and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, for their information and necessary action.

The government said the measure was aimed at preserving the integrity of the traditional institution and maintaining peace and order in Iselu Kingdom while the investigation proceeds.
