A potentially devastating fire outbreak at a five-million-litre diesel storage tank in Lagos was successfully contained on Friday, preventing what authorities described as a major threat to nearby oil and gas facilities.
The incident occurred at the Bono Energy Terminal, located within the Ibru Jetty Complex along the Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway near Coconut Bus Stop in Olodi Apapa.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that no lives were lost and that the swift intervention of emergency responders prevented the blaze from spreading to adjoining storage tanks and other critical infrastructure.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the agency received a distress call at 12:04 p.m. on July 3, 2026.
According to the statement, firefighters from the Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu and Isolo Fire Stations were immediately mobilised to the scene, arriving within 12 minutes at about 12:16 p.m.
The agency said the operation involved a coordinated response by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in collaboration with emergency teams from neighbouring oil and gas facilities.
Through the combined efforts of the responders, the fire was brought under control and completely extinguished by 1:54 p.m., averting what could have been a more serious industrial incident.
Authorities noted that the prompt containment of the blaze prevented it from extending to nearby fuel storage tanks and other vital installations within the terminal, thereby significantly reducing potential damage and economic losses.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The agency reiterated that no casualties were recorded throughout the emergency operation and commended all emergency personnel and stakeholders whose collaborative efforts ensured the successful containment of the fire.
The incident highlights the importance of rapid emergency response and inter-agency collaboration in managing industrial fires, particularly within high-risk oil and gas facilities in Lagos.
