Two people are feared dead after a violent attack at the car park of Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX in the Lekki area of Lagos.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday and was confirmed by Filmhouse Group in a statement issued later in the day.
According to accounts of the incident, a man armed with a cutlass attacked a security personnel and another individual at the cinema premises.
The victims reportedly resisted the attacker and prevented him from gaining access to the facility, although the motive for the attack remains unclear.
Buchi Laba, a sports journalist and eyewitness, said in a post on X that one of the victims was stabbed in the chest while the other sustained a stab wound to the back.
Laba also claimed that one of the victims died while being taken to hospital.
Filmhouse, in its statement, described the incident as a security attack that occurred outside its regular operations and said it was working with the relevant authorities on an ongoing investigation.
The company also commended the two individuals for their actions during the incident, saying their intervention helped contain the situation and restore safety.
“Filmhouse Group is deeply saddened by a security incident that took place outside the premises, in the car park of one of our locations, in the early hours of this morning,” the company said.
Filmhouse said additional precautionary measures had been introduced across its locations following the incident.
It added that security had been increased and prioritised, while assuring staff and customers that their safety remained its highest priority.
The company also said it would continue to monitor the situation as the investigation progresses.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain an official comment from the Lagos State Police Command were unsuccessful.
The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the motive and the full casualty figure, remain subject to the ongoing investigation.
