The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the conclusion of voting in most polling units across Ekiti State following the official close of polls at 2:30 p.m. in Saturday’s governorship election.
The commission said sorting and counting of votes had commenced across polling units statewide as the electoral process moved into the collation stage.
In an update shared on its official X account, INEC stated that all 2,445 polling units designated for the election were successfully opened, describing the exercise as peaceful and orderly.
According to the electoral body, 2,257 polling units, representing 92.31 per cent of the total, commenced voting on schedule before 8:30 a.m.
The remaining 188 polling units, accounting for 7.69 per cent, experienced minor delays but began operations before 10:30 a.m.
“Voting has officially ended in most Polling Units across Ekiti State following the close of polls at 2:30 p.m. Earlier in the day, all 2,445 Polling Units were successfully opened for the Governorship Election: 2,257 PUs (92.31 per cent) opened on schedule before 8:30 a.m., while 188 PUs (7.69 per cent) experienced minor delays but commenced voting before 10:30 a.m.,” the commission stated.
INEC noted that the election process was conducted without major disruptions, attributing the smooth exercise to effective planning and coordination among electoral officials and security personnel deployed across the state.
The commission’s assessment comes amid reports from several parts of the state indicating a generally peaceful atmosphere during the voting exercise, despite isolated concerns over delays in voter accreditation at some polling units earlier in the day.
With voting concluded, election officials have begun sorting and counting ballots at polling units before the results are transmitted and collated in accordance with electoral guidelines.
INEC said it would continue to provide updates as the collation of results progresses across the state.
