A former member of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Funke Ashekun, has come under scrutiny over allegations that she fabricated claims of religious persecution to secure asylum in the United States for her family.
For more than five years, Ashekun has presented herself across various social media platforms as a victim of intimidation and oppression allegedly linked to her former church and its General Overseer, Dr. D.K. Olukoya. Her posts and podcast content have consistently portrayed a narrative of fear and alleged harassment during her time in Nigeria.
However, critics have challenged the credibility of her claims, arguing that she has failed to provide verifiable evidence to substantiate the allegations. Questions have also been raised about inconsistencies in her accounts, with some observers suggesting that the narrative may have been constructed to support an asylum application based on religious persecution.
The controversy intensified following reports that a United States appellate court ordered Ashekun to pay $300,000 in damages in a defamation lawsuit related to her online statements. The ruling, according to critics, further undermines her claims and raises concerns about the accuracy of her public accusations.
Additional allegations have emerged, including claims that Ashekun recruited former MFM members to make statements against Dr. Olukoya. These claims reportedly stem from a leaked audio recording circulating online, though its authenticity has not been independently verified.
Members of MFM and other observers have also expressed surprise at the development, citing what they describe as prior support Ashekun allegedly received from the church, including financial assistance, accommodation, and educational support for her children. These accounts have fueled debate over the motivations behind her sustained criticism of the church leadership.
Despite the growing controversy, Ashekun has continued to maintain her position, reiterating her claims of persecution. The situation remains a subject of public discussion, particularly among religious communities and followers of her online platforms, as questions persist over the validity of her assertions and the broader implications for asylum claims based on religious grounds.
