The Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, Adewole Ebenezer Adebayo, has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful about the country’s future despite growing frustrations over governance challenges.

Adebayo said citizens must not allow dissatisfaction with government performance to erode their belief in Nigeria, stressing that the nation’s potential remains intact regardless of the shortcomings of those in leadership positions.

Speaking on leadership, humanitarian service, and the state of the nation, the SDP chieftain argued that the true measure of public service should be the positive impact on people’s lives rather than the offices individuals occupy.

He noted that many Nigerians have felt neglected and abandoned by institutions meant to serve them, a situation he said informed efforts aimed at restoring confidence and hope among citizens.

“We believed we had to go out and restore hope to the people — to ensure that Nigerians did not lose faith in their country at a time many felt abandoned and unprotected, almost like stateless people in their own land,” Adebayo said.

According to him, periods of poor governance should not be interpreted as evidence that the nation itself has failed.

He observed that many citizens had begun questioning whether the government still cared about their welfare, but maintained that Nigeria remains a country with enormous promise and opportunities.

“People were beginning to question whether anyone still cared, whether government still remembered them. But our message was simple: Nigeria remains a project worth believing in. It still holds great promise and remains one of the greatest places anyone can call home. The failures of government must never be mistaken for the failure of the nation itself,” he added.

Adebayo further explained that the philosophy behind his humanitarian activities goes beyond charity, focusing instead on preserving human dignity and creating opportunities for individuals to improve their circumstances.

Supporters and associates credited him with interventions in education, youth empowerment and enterprise development, describing many of the initiatives as quietly executed without public attention.

Education, they noted, remains a key area of focus, with students across several tertiary institutions reportedly receiving assistance covering tuition fees, accommodation, registration and other academic expenses.

The SDP leader also used the opportunity to advocate a values-driven approach to politics, insisting that political participation should not be reduced to the pursuit of power alone.

“We also want Nigerians to know that politics does not have to be dirty. A politician can still be decent, principled, and committed to the common good. Public service can still reflect family values, faith, and humanity,” he said.

On the need for political reform, Adebayo argued that Nigeria’s challenges cannot be solved merely by changing elected officials, but by transforming the broader political culture that shapes governance.

He said building stronger political parties and encouraging citizens to demand higher standards from leaders are critical steps toward meaningful national progress.

“Our hope is to transform the politics that produced our present challenges. Changing one president alone will not solve Nigeria’s problems; changing the political culture will. And to change the system, we must first build better political parties and raise the expectations of the people. When citizens raise their standards, politics will rise with them,” Adebayo stated.

His comments come amid ongoing national conversations about governance, leadership accountability and the role of private humanitarian interventions in addressing social challenges.

For his supporters, the SDP leader’s message underscores the belief that leadership is demonstrated through service long before public office is attained, and that sustaining hope among citizens remains vital to national development.
