The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally distanced itself from the recent National Summit of Opposition Political Parties held in Ibadan, declaring that it neither participated in nor endorsed the gathering.
In a statement released on Sunday by the party’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Christopher Okechukwu, the ADC leadership, under Nafiu Bala Gombe, described the summit as an assembly of individuals driven by personal political ambitions rather than collective democratic objectives.
Okechukwu emphasised that the party’s “duly constituted and legitimate” leadership had no connection with the event, stressing that those who attended under the ADC banner were not recognised members of the party.
According to the statement, the ADC rejected any association with what it termed a coalition of “disgruntled elements”, accusing the organisers and participants of acting in defiance of legal and institutional frameworks.
The party further alleged that some of the individuals involved had previously ignored a subsisting Court of Appeal judgment by conducting unauthorised congresses and a national convention.
“For the avoidance of doubt, we state unequivocally that they are not members of our party,” Okechukwu said, adding that their presence at the summit amounted to a “reunion of former PDP members masquerading under a false banner.”
The party reiterated its commitment to the rule of law, noting that it is awaiting a pending judgment from the Supreme Court expected imminently.
It maintained that its actions and decisions would continue to align strictly with legal provisions and democratic norms.
Despite the controversy surrounding the summit, the ADC reassured its members and supporters nationwide of its readiness for the next electoral cycle.
The party confirmed that it would fully participate in the 2027 general elections, scheduled for January, and intends to field candidates for all elective positions across the country.
Okechukwu stated that the ADC remains committed to presenting credible candidates and strengthening its position as a viable opposition platform, guided by its constitutional mandate and democratic principles.
