The 2027 Lagos governorship contest will enter a new phase on November 8, when candidates are scheduled to take part in the first debate organised by the Nigeria Debate Consortium ahead of the general elections.

The debate, which begins at 7:00 p.m., will take place at The Hub by IALA, House of His Glory, Plot 18, Providence Road, beside Keystone Bank, Marwa, Lekki, Lagos State.

Nigeria Debate Consortium comprises Channels Television, TVC News, PUNCH Newspaper, TheCable and Vanguard Newspaper.

The Lagos engagement will open a planned series of electoral debates in selected battleground states and will eventually culminate in a presidential debate and town hall.

A statement jointly signed by Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, Director of News at TVC News, and Kingsley Uranta, General Manager of Channels Television, said the initiative was designed to give governorship candidates a credible and non-partisan platform to explain their programmes and respond to issues affecting residents.

Key areas expected to come under scrutiny include transportation, infrastructure, security, housing, education, healthcare, job creation and economic growth.

The consortium said the engagement would allow voters to examine the candidates’ priorities, policy proposals and preparedness to govern, while moving the electoral conversation beyond campaign rhetoric.

TVC News said the debate would give candidates an opportunity to explain not only what they intend to achieve but how they plan to deliver on their promises.

Channels Television similarly said voters deserved clear answers and credible plans from those seeking their mandate, describing the debate as part of the media’s responsibility to strengthen democratic accountability.

Among the prominent contenders in the Lagos race are the All Progressives Congress candidate and incumbent Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat; African Democratic Congress candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour; and Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate Funso Doherty.

Recent reports have highlighted differing policy proposals from the candidates on infrastructure, security, housing, education and healthcare.

The consortium said fairness, neutrality, equal opportunity and editorial independence would guide the debate.

Participating candidates will be subject to the same rules, speaking times and moderation standards.

Experienced journalists will moderate the session, which will be broadcast to national and digital audiences through platforms operated by the participating media organisations.

Organisers urged Lagos residents, particularly eligible voters, young people, civil society organisations, professional groups and members of the business community, to follow the engagement and assess the issues being presented by those seeking to govern the state.

The Nigeria Debate Consortium said its broader objective was to strengthen democratic participation, electoral accountability and informed public discourse through credible and non-partisan electoral debates.
