Non-academic staff unions in Ondo State-owned universities have declared a total and indefinite strike over the alleged failure of the state government to implement an agreement reached with university-based unions.
The industrial action will begin at midnight on Wednesday, September 2, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Ondo State Government.
The directive covers members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) across the state-owned institutions.
Affected universities are Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, and the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo.
The Joint Action Committee of Ondo State-owned Tertiary Institutions (JAC-ODSTI) announced the decision in a statement issued in Akure on Tuesday by its chairman, Tayo Ogungbeni, and secretary, Kunle Akinwonmi.
The unions said the decision followed an emergency meeting of the JAC leadership on Tuesday, convened to review the government’s response to their demands.
According to the unions, the state government had previously announced a 60 per cent increase in subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions and approved the implementation of the Federal Government of Nigeria/university unions agreement beginning from August 2026.
However, JAC-ODSTI alleged that the government released the old subvention allocation for August without incorporating the promised 60 per cent increase.
The development, according to the unions, amounted to a failure to fulfil commitments made to the institutions and their workers.
The unions further demanded the full implementation of the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTTA) and all related allowances, with effect from January 2026.
They stated that the industrial action would remain in force until the allowances were fully paid and the outstanding commitments addressed.
The declaration means that non-academic activities across the three affected state-owned universities could be disrupted from Wednesday night unless the government reaches an agreement with the unions before the strike begins.
