Veteran Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician Iyun Janet Ajilore, popularly known as Saint Janet, has been laid to rest at her residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The celebrated musician was buried on Wednesday following funeral activities attended by her children, family members, colleagues and admirers, according to Premium Times.
Among those who gathered to honour the late musician was veteran Juju singer Gentleman Dele Taiwo, who joined members of the family and the traditional music community to bid farewell to Saint Janet.
Emotional scenes were recorded during the burial, with videos showing her children and other mourners gathered around her remains before she was committed to the earth.
The burial came after a series of funeral activities that began on Tuesday in Lagos.
The programme included a candlelight service, Christian wake and Artists’ Night held at the AIT/Faaji FM compound in Kola Alagbado.
Saint Janet’s family had earlier announced that the musician would be buried at her Abeokuta residence.
Popularly called “Mama Yabis,” Saint Janet carved a niche for herself in Nigeria’s traditional music industry through a distinctive blend of Juju and Highlife music.
Her performances went beyond music, often incorporating humour, satire and social commentary.
The deceased’s energetic stage presence and unconventional approach helped her build a strong following among lovers of traditional Nigerian music.
Her death had earlier triggered an outpouring of grief across Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with colleagues, admirers and members of the traditional music community mourning the loss of the veteran performer.
With her burial, family members, friends and fellow entertainers have formally laid to rest a musician whose career left a notable mark on Nigeria’s Juju and Highlife tradition.
