Dotun Oladipo, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, publisher of Eagle Online, has died at the age of 56.
Oladipo died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos, after suddenly taking ill at his office.
The management of Eagle Online announced his death early Wednesday, describing it as a shock to his colleagues, friends and associates.
According to the publication, Oladipo was in his “usual state of health” earlier in the day before he suddenly became ill.
Multiple reports said the veteran journalist drove himself to an unnamed hospital several hours before his death.
His death was also confirmed by Danlami Nmodu, President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), who announced the development on the guild’s WhatsApp platform.
Oladipo was a former president of GOCOP and held the position of Emeritus President at the time of his death.
Nmodu said, “It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”
The General Secretary of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society, Nkanu Egbe, also announced Oladipo’s death on Wednesday.
Egbe described him as the president of the cooperative and said he died suddenly in Lagos on Tuesday.
“It is with profound sorrow that I announce the sudden death of our President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, who passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos, at the age of 56,” he said.
According to Egbe, Oladipo combined his leadership of the cooperative with a journalism career spanning nearly three decades.
“His passing is a devastating loss not only to IMPCMS but to Nigerian journalism as a whole,” he added.
He said details of the funeral arrangements, condolence visits and interim leadership of the cooperative would be communicated in due course.
Egbe also urged members to keep Oladipo’s family and the cooperative in their prayers.
Tributes have continued to emerge following the journalist’s death.
Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, described Oladipo in a Facebook post as a “complete gentleman, accomplished digital journalist and remarkable human being”.
Sowore expressed condolences to Oladipo’s family, friends, colleagues and Nigeria’s digital journalism community.
“Dotun Oladipo has passed away. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire community of digital journalists in Nigeria,” he wrote.
“May Dotun Oladipo rest in power!”
Oladipo was a veteran journalist whose career spanned several major Nigerian media organisations.
He served as politics editor at PUNCH Newspapers and also worked with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun.
He later founded Eagle Online through Premium Eagle Media Limited, establishing himself as one of the notable figures in Nigeria’s digital journalism sector.
Oladipo obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992.
His death comes as a major loss to Nigeria’s journalism industry, particularly the country’s growing online publishing sector.
