Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has renewed her appeal to Nigerians to embrace home gardening as a practical way to improve food security, following another successful harvest from her vegetable garden at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to a post by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on its X account on Tuesday, the First Lady visited the garden on Monday for a routine harvest from the vegetable plot established about two years ago under the Every Home A Garden initiative.

The garden, which has remained productive since its establishment, yielded fresh vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin.

After the harvest, Mrs Tinubu shared part of the vegetables with members of her staff, encouraging Nigerians to cultivate the habit of giving and showing compassion by sharing with others.

The vegetable garden was unveiled at the Presidential Villa in July 2024 under the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative, a programme aimed at encouraging household farming and strengthening food security amid rising food prices across the country.

The initiative was introduced alongside the Every Home A Garden competition, designed to motivate women and families nationwide to cultivate vegetables within their homes and make better use of available spaces.

Speaking at the launch of the project, the First Lady explained that the demonstration garden was intended to show that even limited household spaces could be transformed into productive gardens capable of supplying nutritious food while helping families reduce their feeding costs.

The garden was initially planted with a variety of crops, including spinach, waterleaf, bitter leaf, scent leaf, ewedu, okra and lemongrass.

Since its establishment, the project has remained a key part of Mrs Tinubu’s advocacy for household farming, healthy living and environmental sustainability, while promoting home-grown food production as a strategy for improving nutrition and reducing pressure on household budgets.
